Event Description:
Eugene sizzles! Community members and visitors are invited to spend their summer outside enjoying this unique series of outdoor concerts, movies, performances, breakfasts at bike bridges, skate competitions and dancing. Enjoy open air movies in our local parks and bring a picnic to the much-loved Sunday afternoon concerts in Washburne Park. Head downtown on Wednesday evenings to take part in everything from Circus Circus! for families, and open air dancing, to a fashion show hosted by local artists. Details: All events are family-friendly. Most events are free; downtown events are free with donation of one can of food to Relief Nursery; Skate Competitions $3. Bring chairs to downtown; blankets, lawn chairs and picnics to the parks. No glass containers, alcohol, smoking, or pets. All movies will have subtitles for the hearing impaired. Subject to change or cancellation due to weather. Fri, 7/2 @ 7:30 p.m. Downtown in the Atrium Bldg, 10th & Olive. No Shame Theatre. One theatre. Five minutes. Three rules: 1. All pieces must be original. 2. No breaking anything, including the law. 3. Five minutes and the lights go out. Each show is composed of the first fifteen acts to sign up at 7:30. Welcoming skits, poetry, dancing, monologues, music, and experimental. Bring your friends and bring an act -- or there's no shame in just watching. Sun, 7/4 @ 6:30 p.m. Washburne Park, Agate & 20th. Eugene Symphonic Band. Traditional concert band repertoire including pops, marches & more. Wed, 7/7 @ 6:00 p.m. Downtown at Broadway Plaza. Film Noir Night: Casablanca & Eugene Community Choirs Before the premiere of Film Noir Night, featuring Casablanca, three community choirs sing their hearts out for you! Enjoy with your family, friends and loved ones. Sit back and relax with the sounds of the City Singers, In Accord and Soromundi, Lesbian Chorus of Eugene. These three popular choirs will perform for approximately 45-60 minutes to start off the evening. Enjoy dinner in one of the many places downtown while the sun sets and return around 8:45 p.m. to watch the stars under the stars in Broadway Plaza for Casablanca, the classic film that explores valor, sacrifice and love. Eugene Police Crime Prevention Experts will be on hand at every downtown event with the latest tips and programs for you and your family. Imagination Station: Let your creativity flow at M.E.C.C.A’s imagination station! The kids in KIDZ ROCK will blow you away! Starting at approximately 7:00 p.m., enjoy an evening full of talented youngsters. First, the rising musical “talents of tomorrow” from the community perform. The evening also features an area for Eugene’s best skateboarders to demonstrate their skills and support the construction of the new City Central Skatepark. City of Eugene’s skateboard instructors will be on hand with skateboards and helmets to help youngsters try skateboarding! Thu, 7/15 @ 6:30 p.m. Monroe Park, Monroe St. & 10 th Ave. Hookah Stew. Rock, Funk, Powerpop. Known for their wide musical range, and frenetic live shows, Hookah Stew has become a well known name on the West Coast music scene. The Portland, Oregon trio met in 2007 and within months was on the road with a mission to rock every city in their path. They have a full summer of touring the west coast including their stop in Eugene. Fri, 7/16 @ 9:00-ish p.m. Washington Park, 19th to 21st along Washington St. The Sandlot. Ninkasi presents Volifonix and Sea Bell LIVE & Dodgeball Ninkasi presents Volifonix and Sea Bell LIVE. Celebrate with these champions of Eugene’s Last Band Standing and the UO’s Ethos Magazine Bandest of the Bands competitions in a classic Eugene street festival folly at approx. 7:00 p.m. Get your friends and costumes together and arrive at 6:00 pm for a big game of dodgeball! Thu, 7/22 @ 6:30 p.m. Amazon Park. Ty Curtis Band. This Salem-based blues group dazzles Eugene with their Blues/Rock/Funk. They recently earned 2nd place in the prestigious 2009 International Blues Challenge that started with more than 2,000 bands in nine countries and 36 states. One hundred bands earned the right to come to Memphis, ten made it to the Finals and The Ty Curtis Band was voted 2nd place by a panel of judges made up of industry professionals. No small feat for a young band from Salem, Oregon. The band’s performances feature passionate vocals and driving guitar from Ty Curtis, masterful harmonica and powerful vocals of Hank Shreve and three part harmonies with the added voice of bass player Milo Fultz.
